Q: I keep getting told “I should be using the cloud” – Is cloud computing right for my business?

A: Simply “Cloud Computing” is the supply of computer services over the Internet. For example Microsoft will be releasing Office 365 – which basically is Microsoft Office Services on the Internet. You will be able to create, edit and store online content using Microsoft applications and server products.

For a small business this has major plus points. Microsoft boasts these Office 365 Key Benefits:

•             Access to e-mail, documents, contacts, and calendars on nearly any device.

•             Simple and secure collaboration with colleagues and business partners.

•             Works seamlessly with Microsoft Office and the other programs people use today

•             Business-class features including IT-level phone support, and robust security and privacy controls and standards.

•             Comprehensive solutions including desktop productivity applications, portals, extranets, external Web site, instant messaging, voice and video conferencing, Web conferencing, e-mail, voice mail and unified messaging.

•             Pay-as-you-go pricing options which provide predictability and flexibility for all or part of an organization.

Well after reading that you didn’t know cloud computing could be so much fun!

But seriously – computer software and applications are easier to support and make available to users without the costs of expensive hardware and IT specialists.

I’m currently writing this article using “Google Docs” which is online (so cloud based in a web browser), will then download it as a word document and email it. Simple!

So as workforces become more diverse and collaborative, then cloud computing will become mainstream for your business. You may even be using it without knowing it. In a few years you’ll be saying – “do you remember the old days, when had to install software on your computer before you could use it.”
