Q: Internet Security for Businesses – What are the best products to use?

A: If you wish to filter internet access, i.e. from Adult content, and or particular sites, you typically have 3 choices.

  1. Software which is installed on the user’s computer.
  2. Internet access using DNS filtering.
  3. Hardware firewall with content filtering.

1. For just 1 or 2 PC’s Internet Security software can normally be configured to restrict access to the internet. Kaspersky Internet Security for example (other vendors provide similar products) allow the setup of “parental” controls to filter web content, applications and even  schedule when you can use the internet.

2. For 5 to 10 PC’s in an office then filtering can be done via “DNS”. Simply when you access a web address such as www.bbc.co.uk – this is looked up on the internet via a DNS server (Domain Name Server). The DNS server tells your browser the IP address (or number) where the BBC website is located, and the web page is delivered. Most ISP’s provide their own DNS servers by default and are configured in your router. You can subscribe or in some cases use a free service, whereby the DNS servers in your routers are changed to a third party filtering provider. You then configure through the provider’s website what content you want users connecting via to the internet to have access to.

3. For an office environment where you may have 10 to 20 users plus, then the most efficient use of filtering can be a hardware firewall. This can be setup not only to filter internet access, but some models can virus scan, schedule internet access and protect your network against outside hacking and malicious software.

No matter what technology you employ, if you are thinking of implementing change within your existing business, it is always wise to take good advice (and that’s not just other peoples comments found via a Google search). Employ a human resources advisor for just a few hours; do a risk assessment/benefit to risk analysis, and keep in focus the rights and culture of your existing workplace.  Education and knowledge is the key to reducing business risk, and keeping a happy workforce.
