Will my Windows XP stop working now Microsoft say “it’s dead”

You may have heard of the Microsoft advertising campaign for Windows – “XP is dead – long live Windows 8!”. What does this mean?

Your computer will not stop working overnight. If you are using a computer system with XP on it, you can still use it, it’s not going to blow-up, self-destruct or tell you to buy a new PC.

Microsoft say: “After April 8, 2014, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for Windows XP. Security updates patch vulnerabilities that may be exploited by malware and help keep users and their data safer. PCs running Windows XP after April 8, 2014, should not be considered to be protected, and it is important that you migrate to a current supported operating system – such as Windows 8.1 – so you can receive regular security updates to protect their computer from malicious attacks.”

Simply nothing lasts forever! XP has been around for 12 years and finally Microsoft are no longer going to update it or support software applications that run on it. Other software vendors will no longer develop products or update program which run on this platform.

In some cases you may need to continue to run an XP based PC if you have software from vendors which do not support Win 8.1 for example, but this should be only a short term solution, and it would be advisable if doing so not to have an XP system directly connected to the internet. In a business or corporate environment this may be possible if behind a secure and suitably configured firewall. In most cases software vendors have known this will be happening and will be offering upgrades or migration paths for users.

In many cases XP has been one of the most stable and successful operating systems from Microsoft, and it’s why people and businesses have not needed to change. But change will surely come and what better reason to buy a nice shiny new PC – mmmm, or may be a notebook, or tablet or????
