How much does my computer know and share about me with others?

After some of the latest news reports, many people are worried about the potential issues resulting from smart devices and computers and the use of your data without our knowledge.

Yes computers are becoming far more smarter and dare I say more intelligent, but perhaps not yet in the Professor Stephen Hawking way when he said – “Artificial intelligence could spell end of human race”.

But think of it in this way – these comments were made about an article on artificial intelligence from a computer industry website.

Relates one man – “Remember visiting a computer store in the middle of the 80s. There were two teenage girls there. The first girl said to the second girl: Let’s touch it (an 8 bit computer). The second said: Let’s not. What if it knows who we are? That was when people hardly knew what computers could do”

The reply – “And fast forward almost 30 years, and those same girls are probably giving all sorts of information to the likes of Facebook, happily searching on Google, etc – forgetting what they prophesied.”

And it’s true. We are happy share information with advertisers, retailers, businesses, friends and family without even thinking about it. It’s just become second nature as technology is becoming part of our DNA.

How much the does my computer share with others – well you can certainly make sure you check your security settings in your browser, and apps. Use a trusted and up to date software security suite. But potentially it could be everything that we do as users and tell our computer to do.

So it comes down to good old common sense – be balanced, you need to share some information, even if it’s just placing an order over the internet or sharing photo’s with friends. But if you do share personal details, including things like your location, bank accounts, card details, or just signing up for that “free account”, check it out first. Do a bit of research, and be sure you understand what information you are sharing, because once it’s left your keyboard, it will be out there forever!
