Why is my broadband so slow?

Over the past months many people have seen a sharp decrease in ADSL performance locally. As you will have noticed with the large BT fibre roll happening, allot of work is being done to bring faster speeds to enabled areas, but as this work continues, standard broadband is deteriorating, and at times becoming almost unusable.

So here’s, some advice before calling your ISP:

1. Run a speed test from speedtest.net or equivalent to get a base line for your ADSL. Do this preferably from a PC/MAC which is hardwired to your router to eliminate any Wi-Fi performance lag. Do this early morning, midday and evening to see the variation, and at times when you do not have many devices connected to your network. Do this over a few days if you can.

2. Log into your router and check the speed the ADSL has synchronised to the exchange – you’ll see this as a “handshake” or ADSL Status with an up and down speed. Your speed test will never be more than this speed. If you’re “UP” speed is greater than your “DOWN” speed, then call you broadband provider. Restart your router and check the “handshake” again. If your handshake is say 5mbps, and your speed test is 1mbps, then this could indicate performance issues via your provider. Typically your UP speed should be around 10% of your down speed.

Even in the above there are multiple variables, but these are some simple things to have written down when you call your provider – you’ll find it will short cut allot of unnecessary diagnosis and red herrings.

I have had customers who have complained to their ISP, and have got speed issues resolved, which were done at exchange level and with no fault with the customer’s equipment. So if you are experiencing problems do call your ISP, even if there is nothing they can ultimately do until BT have finished the infrastructure upgrades.

In the meantime, check weekly if you can get an upgrade to Infinity (BT Fibre) as cabinets are coming online all the time. Once it says “Accepting Orders”, phone up and place an order – you will not regret it! For availability go to: http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when/
