Do I need to upgrade to Office 2016?

If you currently have an Office 365 subscription which gives you rights to upgrade, then yes. Just login into the Office 365 Portal and upgrade – go to “Setup” and “Download the latest version of Office”.

If you are a desktop user and have purchased a retail, OEM, MLK or Open License, then you will need to weigh up which features you use most, and the purchase cost of replacing your current version. Consider if you need support for features and applications that integrate with Office, or Office itself. Anything older than Office 2010 should generally be replaced, unless you have specific requirements to use these versions. In fact, mainstream support for Office 2010 applications was ended in Oct 2015 by Microsoft, which gave Office 2010 a five-year life cycle. Having said this many people still run Office 2007 and older.

If you are a simple Word and Excel user with good reliable internet access, then a no cost option would be to sign up for a Free Microsoft Outlook.com email account. This gives you the browser based versions of Microsoft key applications like Word and Excel. Go to – https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/outlook-com/ and have a look. They may not be as feature rich as a full desktop version, but are surprisingly comprehensive for most requirements.

If Office is a key business application, then look at the options of Office 365 or an in-premise upgrade to your current versions. Key features of the new office suites can readily be found on Microsoft’s web site, with big advantages to communication and collaboration between teams.

So in summary – if you are an occasional user, look at Office as a web service via Outlook.com (or alternately Google’s suite of Apps). If this is a key business tool which you use on a day-to-day basis and cannot live without, then consider upgrading if your current version is 2010 or older. If running 2013, then stick with it to get the most out of your investment, unless there are over-riding reasons to change or key features that are needed.
